Washboard repair

what causes washboard?

Regular grading and proper drainage can help keep your gravel driveway in top shape, saving you from bigger, more costly repairs down the road.

    • When vehicles drive at the same speed over the same path (especially between 8–40 km/h or 5–25 mph), small ripples start forming.

    • Each tire impact slightly displaces gravel, reinforcing the pattern over time.

    • Spinning tires or abrupt stops cause gravel to shift and mound up in ridges.

    • If the driveway is too flat or unevenly sloped, water can’t drain properly, allowing the surface to loosen and ripple.

    • Using incorrect gravel

    • Dry gavel is more mobile and susceptible to bouncing and sliding, especially under tire pressure

    • Water erosion - if water pools or runs down the driveway, it can loosen the surface and exacerbate washboarding.
